#7298 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Option to change Reporter field in a new ticket into a dropdown

Description

The Reporter field in a new ticket is an empty text-box. It would be nice if this could be changed into a drop down just like the assign to field. Otherwise, the bug gets assigned to no one. This is fine for some groups, but in the group I work in, one person enters bugs/tasks and assigns them. It is error prone and time consuming to have to type in the user everytime.

If implemented, this should be an option just like turning the "Assign To" into a dropdown. Making it manditory would be bad for cases where there are lots of users.

Priority: normallow

I was rereading over this "enhancement" that I wrote yesterday and I think I was slightly off and I was confused.

The reported by field gets automatically filled in when you are logged in and writing a bug, though the user can change it .

It would be nice though to add a few options for the Reported by box:

  1. Forced to Current User: The entry box is disabled and filled with the user logged in. If not logged in, "Anonymous" is filled in.
  2. Forced to Known User: The entry box is enabled and the value put in is validated against the list of users. It would be preselected to the current user just as it is now
  3. Forced to Known User Using Dropdown: The entry box is enabled, but it is turned into a drop down so that the user must be selected, just like the drop down option for the assignee. It would be preselected to the current user though,
  4. Unvalidated User: This is how it works now. So if logged in, it would be filled in with the current user. The value entered is not validated.

I'm changing the priority to low because filling in the Reported By field with the logged in user resolves my biggest gripe which was having to manually type in a user.

Resolution: wontfix
Status: newclosed

This sounds like a pretty rare situation, so I would suggest implementing this as a plugin.

I need this feature because to file bugs on behalf of my boss. Anyone know if there is a plugin yet?

Nevermind, I see it is already implemented in Trac itself for admin users. I would suggest changing the resolution to fixed instead of wontfix.

Well, the drop down you see for the reporter field is most likely provided by your intelligent browser… That's apparently good enough, so wontfix it'll stay ;-)
