Description (last modified by anonymous)

I've been working on trac UI for a while now. I was wondering if my work could ever make into core. I love trac for its simplicity and power, but really when it comes to UI I'm having hard time convincing developers and designers that it is the way to go.

In any case, my theme is almost finished, obviously rough around edges, but it looks great I think.

Would anyone also be interested to help me out developing it?

Nice work. I think BloodHound already has a Bootstrap theme for Trac. You may want to check that out /coordinate with them.

I think the Trac default theme should remain recognizable visually. (I.e. keep red-black-white color scheme, no "big" layout changes.) Can that be achieved with bootstrap? Would it make customization easier for others that prefer a different theme?

Hey, thanks.

Yes I've heard about bloodhound, there are two issues with that project. First the fact that it doesn't really look better, yes it uses bootstrap but UI seems messier than original trac interface. And it is different from trac in so many ways, added functionality and packaged plugins.

I prefer vanilla trac. I'm pretty sure a lot of people will agree. Forks are nice, but to the extent they are specialised views of software of their authors, Strongly opinionated etc.

I didn't change anything in the UI didn't add anything that trac doesn't support out of the box. I tried my best to keep all the classes and structure present before my intervention.

That said it will be quite easy for anyone to work with bootstrap. You can even download free boostrap-theme.css files put it in your trac theme and you will have a completely new look! New colors etc. Take a look: http://bootswatch.com/

So to answer your questions.

  1. keep red-black-white color - No problem!
  2. no "big" layout changes - already so!
  3. Would it make customization easier for others that prefer a different theme? - very easy!

Yes, I've seen that project.

No work had been done since 2012, it has modified only 2 template files. It doesn't work with 1.0+ version.

It cannot even be defined as a partial implementation.

In contrast, I worked on: https://github.com/wearede/DEtrac/tree/master/templates

I hope we can eventually add a responsive layout for Trac. I've worked on Bloodhound quite a bit so I have experience with Bootstrap. I recommend that we approach the problem by first surveying the available frameworks that support responsive layout. I had considered proposing this for the development cycle leading to the next major release after 1.2, but I think that's a discussion to have immediately following the 1.2 release.

Trac's HTML structure needs to be re-done for responsive and for basically any significant UX upgrade. I'm working on a branch that strips the core to barenaked of all built-in styles (styling hides a lot of the structural faults) and will be looking to provide step by step improvements of building a style base back up. Obviously it would make sense to collaborate on this, but not sure at the moment what and how and where.

Replying to sandrodz@…:

That would be a great question to ask on the MailingList.

I created a more generic ticket about improving the user interface of Trac, #11953. Changes are unlikely to happen before milestone:1.2, but its relatively high on my list of priorities for Trac.

I hope you aren't discouraged to continuing working on this design and involving the community by this ticket being closed. The issues are better discussed on the MailingList though, and if your design is developed further and there is consensus from users and the TracTeam that it would be good to integrate to the core, that is always a possibility.

I agree with comment:3 about BH. The UI is messier and they did not fully understand the simplicity and generic usefulness of Trac before making opinionated changes.

I am also interested in contributing to a new UI, but my experience with SolR (and lack of Web-UI experience) might make my time better invested in #11627.
