Description
I would be very interested in working on Trac for the summer as part of the Google Summer of Code project (http://code.google.com/soc/2008/).
I was a bit of a lurker on this project over the summer when I was working at a software company in Chennai, India (I'm actually graduating from Electronics Engineering in Canada this fall). I added to some wiki pages and always worked off the development version, and would really appreciate the chance to be able to put the time into it that I had wanted to before to help improve the project.
I guess what needs to be done is:
- A mentor to give feedback and suggestions
- A well-defined project idea (I'd be fine just fixing bugs and writing documentation, but there should really be a clear goal for the project to be accepted for funding)

For a little more detail, the Trac organization will receive $500 at the end of the summer. The project will need to provide a list of ideas (already on the wiki and in the roadmaps), a way to rank the list of ideas (either by comments on the wiki, or by an irc meeting), and some guidance for whatever student is chosen.
The applicable dates/deadlines are as follows:
- March 3: Mentoring organizations can begin submitting applications to Google (~12 noon PST/19:00 UTC).
- March 12: Mentoring organization application deadline (12 noon PDT/19:00 UTC).
- March 13-17: Google program administrators review organization applications.
- March 17: List of accepted mentoring organizations published on code.google.com/soc/ (~12 noon PDT/19:00 UTC).
- Interim Period: Would-be student participants discuss application ideas with mentoring organizations.
- March 24: Student application period opens (~12 noon PDT/19:00 UTC).
- March 31: Student application deadline 5:00 PM PDT/00:00 UTC April 1, 2008.
- Interim Period: Mentoring organizations review and rank student proposals; where necessary, mentoring organizations may request further proposal detail from the student applicant.
- April 11: All mentors must signed up and all student proposals matched with a mentor by 00:00 PDT/07:00 UTC. IRC Meeting to resolve any outstanding duplicate accepted students (timing TBD).
- April 14: accepted student proposals announced at code.google.com/soc/ (~12 noon PDT/19:00 UTC).

Interested in being updated if Trac will participate to SOC and which features will be focused on.

Well, it looks like the deadline for applications was missed. Just thought I should close the bug to clean it up. Maybe next year.
Most of the non-default work I did was improving workflows and making them fit well to the company's policy. I would like to improve the sample workflows significantly and to enhance the scripts for checking their correctness. I'd also like to improve the documentation for creating visualizations out of workflow files.
I did quite a bit of work with the configuration files and would also like to make improvements to the authentication system, both the documentation and the default config files offered (but mostly the documentation). This would deal with creating SSL certificates and setting them up for secure communications.
