A: "Roles" in ReST are actually the :trac: syntax. The .. trac:: syntax is for "directives". As the label of the link can be set with roles, I didn't see a reason for keeping the "directive" example. It was wrong anyway, as a _ prefix indicates a target, not a reference. Substitution references are what you want (described on WikiRestructuredText). I will re-add a correct example.
