The server on which I run trac has no SMTP server, so I have trac pointing to our main SMTP server at the office. That server locked up yesterday causing trac notifications to stall the trac web pages until they timed out the SMTP connection. Those notices were also lost. If we had submission via /usr/sbin/sendmail, the local nullmailer queue would deal with retries. This also allows us to centralize the mail server routing on the server in one place (the nullmailer configuration), rather than on every application. I'd prefer not to run a full SMTP server on the trac box for administrative reasons, but if I have to, I have to, I suppose.
